Community-Based Preventive Health and Education Activities Implemented in Mellit Locality, North Darfur

During 27–28 January 2026, the Humanity for Development and Prosperity Organization (HDPO) implemented a community-based preventive health and education intervention in Mellit Locality, North Darfur, targeting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities affected by limited access to health services.

The activity formed part of ongoing emergency health and basic protection services and aimed to strengthen household- and community-level prevention and management of common communicable and non-communicable diseases, while promoting positive health-seeking behavior.

A total of 40 trained Community Health Workers (CHWs) (20 women and 20 men) were deployed across residential neighborhoods, IDP shelter areas, and health facility catchment zones. Through structured household visits, CHWs reached 1,344 households within two days, delivering health education on disease prevention, hygiene practices, routine childhood vaccination, safe drinking water, nutrition, and maternal and reproductive health.

During the outreach, CHWs also identified suspected medical cases and facilitated referrals to nearby primary health care facilities, contributing to early detection and improved linkages between communities and health services. Complementary activities included distribution of health education materials and brief community awareness sessions.

The intervention was implemented by HDPO in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sudan through the Rapid Response Fund (RRF) and funded by the U.S. Department of State. Strong community engagement highlighted the effectiveness of community-led preventive approaches. HDPO will continue strengthening preventive health outreach to support early action, awareness, and resilience in displacement-affected settings.
