Increasing access to essential lifesaving primary healthcare services for recently displaced persons and vulnerable host communities in Mellit Locality of North Darfur State in Sudan.

Humanity for Development and Prosperity Organization (HDPO), as part of its continued commitment to enhancing access to essential primary healthcare services to recently displaced persons and vulnerable host communities in Mellit Locality of North Darfur State in Sudan, has initiated a three-day intensive training program for Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Mellit Locality. This training is being conducted in close coordination with the State Ministry of Health, with support from IOM Sudan and USAID.

The project seeks to save lives, restore dignity and safety of newly displaced persons and vulnerable host communities in Mellit Locality. HDPO works closely with the affected population in planning and providing humanitarian assistance. To this effect, HDPO identified community health workers from among the affected population to be trained and become part of the system for delivering assistance to the affected population.

A total of 40 participants (27 women and 13 men) are being trained as Community Health Workers. The training employed a participatory methodology and covered key topics including fundamental health concepts, disease prevention and transmission, environmental health, and primary healthcare. Participants exhibited a high degree of engagement throughout the sessions and appreciated the incorporation of pre- and post-training assessments to evaluate learning outcomes and knowledge enhancement.

During group discussions, participants also proposed a community-led initiative titled “A Safety Box for Every Household,” for safe storage and disposal of medicines and medical equipment at household level. This is aimed at mitigating risks to children and promoting safety and good practice of managing medicine at home.
