HDPO Field Office in El Fasher Affected by Indiscriminate Shelling – Staff Safe

Demonstrating its continued commitment to humanitarian action under extremely challenging conditions, the Humanity for Development and Prosperity Organization (HDPO) confirms that its field office in El Fasher, North Darfur, was impacted by indiscriminate shelling today, 7 June 2024, amid a serious deterioration of the security situation in the city.

From the early morning hours, shelling occurred across El Fasher City and continued until approximately 13:00. The bombardment affected multiple residential and operational areas, posing significant risks to civilians and humanitarian actors alike.

During this period, HDPO’s field office located in Darja District, North Darfur, approximately 30 meters north of the UNICEF field office, was struck by a projectile. Fortunately, no staff were present at the office at the time, as movement had been restricted due to the escalating hostilities, and no injuries were reported.

The impact caused substantial material damage, including partial destruction of the office hall, damage to a hired field vehicle parked within the compound, and shrapnel penetration that destroyed office furniture, laptops, and other essential equipment. The office’s water and power systems were also rendered inoperable as a result of the blast.

Once security conditions allow, HDPO will conduct a comprehensive damage assessment to document losses and determine operational implications. Despite this incident, HDPO remains steadfast in its mission and deeply grateful that no lives were lost.

This incident underscores the high risks faced by humanitarian organizations operating on the frontlines and reinforces HDPO’s resolve to continue delivering life-saving assistance while prioritizing staff safety and adherence to humanitarian principles in North Darfur.
