Our Work

WASH — Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

HDPO WASH programming contributes to the universality and sustainability of WASH services in fragile contexts, targeting IDPs, host communities, and public institutions. We adopt community-led processes and integrate WASH with Health, Nutrition, and Protection using climate-smart solutions.

Goal: To improve public health, dignity, and well-being by providing sustainable access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, and promoting good hygiene practices.

Recent Achievement: With funding from IOM (May–July 2025), HDPO repaired and refitted 4 non-functional solar-powered water pumps and 30 handpumps, constructed 80 emergency latrines and 140 bathing facilities for women, trained 100 hygiene promoters, distributed 1,000 hygiene kits, and conducted solid waste management campaigns in North Darfur.

Health & Nutrition

Our Health programming works towards saving lives, ending preventable deaths, achieving health equity, and building resilient health systems. Our Nutrition programming addresses maternal, infant, and young child malnutrition through multi-sectoral, evidence-based strategies targeting children, women, and low-income populations.

Goal: To ensure healthy lives and promote the well-being of the most vulnerable by restoring health systems, increasing access to lifesaving services, and empowering communities to respond to disease outbreaks.

Recent Achievement: In late 2024, with funding from RRF through IOM/USAID, HDPO implemented an Emergency Integrated Health, WASH and Protection project for IDPs and host communities in El Fasher Locality, North Darfur. HDPO rehabilitated Hai-Thowra Janoub Health Centre and operated mobile clinic services to increase access to essential healthcare in hard-to-reach areas.

Emergency Shelter / Non-Food Items

HDPO provides emergency shelter and essential non-food items to populations displaced by conflict and disaster. Our ESNFI programming integrates with Protection and WASH to ensure dignified living conditions for the most vulnerable families.

Food Security & Livelihoods

Our Food Security and Livelihoods programming provides emergency food assistance to crisis-affected populations while building long-term livelihoods resilience. As part of our long-term development focus, we work alongside Health, Nutrition, and Education as core development programming areas, promoting sustainable livelihoods for the most vulnerable.

Education

The education system in Sudan is severely damaged by the ongoing armed conflict. In 2025, over 17 million children are reported out of school. Approximately 90% of displaced individuals are using schools as shelters, posing a significant barrier to education for over 2.5 million displaced and host community children.

Our education programming focuses on four areas: improving access to quality education; enhancing quality of teaching and learning; creating safe and supportive learning environments through psychosocial support; and building resilience in education systems to ensure learning continuity during crises.

Protection

HDPO Protection focuses on ensuring that the rights of individuals are respected and upheld, particularly during crises or disasters, regardless of background. Our programming approaches include protection mainstreaming, protection integration, and standalone protection programming.

Our Protection work covers three key areas: General Protection to ensure safety, dignity, and rights of vulnerable individuals; Child Protection to safeguard children from violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation; and Gender-Based Violence prevention and response, addressing root causes and ensuring survivors have access to quality care.

Our Humanitarian Response Strategy

The focus of our humanitarian response is to save lives, reduce suffering, restore dignity, and give hope to affected populations. We start every intervention with a needs assessment, often leading joint assessments and sharing reports through cluster coordination. We continue operations in our current areas while maintaining capacity to respond to new emergencies. Our commitment to people and community-based solutions remains central to strengthening localised response capacity and resilience.
