As part of its emergency protection response in Mellit Locality, the Humanity for Development and Prosperity Organization (HDPO) established and strengthened a Community-Based Protection Network (CBPN) in January 2026 in Mellit Locality, North Darfur State, reinforcing community-led mechanisms to protect conflict-affected populations.
The activity was implemented by HDPO with funding from the U.S Department of State and in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) through the Rapid Response Fund (RRF). The intervention aimed to enhance early identification, prevention, and response to protection risks, with particular focus on women, children, and other vulnerable groups.
In close coordination with community leaders and local committees, 16 CBPN members were selected—8 women and 8 men—from IDP shelters, displacement camps, and host communities. Selection was based on community trust, previous experience, commitment to protection principles, confidentiality, and voluntary service, ensuring inclusive representation and strong community ownership.
A one-day refresher training was delivered using participatory and interactive methods, addressing identified capacity gaps. Key topics included community-based protection principles, roles and responsibilities of CBPN members, safe referral pathways, Psychological First Aid (PFA), prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), child protection, and the Code of Conduct and Do No Harm principles. Pre- and post-tests were conducted to support learning outcomes.
The training fostered strong engagement, teamwork, and trust among participants, strengthening their ability to work collectively to address protection risks. Participants emphasized the importance of continued support, including refresher trainings, coordination meetings, and basic tools to sustain network functionality.
Overall, the establishment and capacity building of the CBPN represent a significant step toward strengthening community-led protection mechanisms in Mellit Locality, contributing to improved protection outcomes, community resilience, and the safety and dignity of vulnerable populations.
