HUMANITY FOR DEVELOPMENT & PROSPERITY ORG (HDPO) RAPID NEEDS ASSESSMENT MISSION – ELFASHER SOUTH (29/30 May 2023)
Introduction:
The current security situation in El Fasher remains volatile with reports of heavy clashes between SAF and RSF. The number of Internal Displaced Persons continues to rise every day in the temporary holding sites around El Fasher. To understand the unfolding situation around El Fasher, HDPO and Depth Action Organization (DAO) carried a rapid assessment from 29th to 30th May 2023 to assess the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis and to do a quick needs assessment.
Findings:
The team visited Salam North, Salam South and Hai Jil areas in South El Fasher. In these areas, newly displaced persons are living in schools, mosques and others are living with relatives. The schools the temporary holding places the assessment team visited included: Dar al neim School, Sara Nursery school all in Salam South and Al Andalus and Esmail Suileman Mosque in Salam North. The team spoke with local leaders and the affected persons themselves and found out the following:
• The total number of the newly arrived IDPs since 15 April 2023 is estimated to be 245 HHs (125 in schools, 5 in mosques and 115 living with relatives). The total number of newly displaced persons is estimated to be including 130 children. The local leaders said people come into the schools every day so the number keeps on increasing.
• When asked what their urgent needs are; the IDPs and host communities prioritized food, clean water, health, protection, ES NFIs, mosquito nets, sanitation and hygiene promotion.
• The team also visited Siedelshuhada health center and the current needs of the health center are: emergency drugs, cleaning tools, chairs, desks, plastic mats, vaccines, fuel for the generators, labs materials, incentives for daily running the center. At the Health Centre, the team found the daily admission is between 25 to 40 patients.
HDPO is on ground
Despite the situation in North Darfur being volatile, the Humanity for Development & Prosperity Organization (HDPO) has continued to serve the people in need. With Support from the people of United States on America through USAID extended through the UN IOM, HDPO is starting a new four-month (1-June-2023 to 30-September-2023) Rapid Response intervention to address the immediate needs of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and host communities in North Darfur State. This project will provide lifesaving services in the sectors of Protection, Water and Sanitation (WASH) and Health through providing mobile clinic services in areas with acute health service needs.
Our biggest challenge remains resources to provide lifesaving services that are so much needed right now in North Darfur.
