HDPO trains volunteers on environmental sanitation and community hygiene promotion in Al Fashir
Due to the importance of raising awareness of environmental sanitation, which would reduce diseases and their vectors, preserve the environment, reduce the risks of water and air pollution, and follow the best methods of waste disposal according to the rules of environmental sanitation, (HDPO) trained (19) people of both sexes in Al Fashir, the capital of North Darfur.
The trainees received valuable information during the one-day workshop from three medical facilitators from the Ministry of Health in North Darfur.
Overcrowding, social and economic imbalances and pollution lead to physical and psychological illnesses.
HDPO held a training workshop for volunteers on environmental sanitation and community hygiene promotion in South Al Fashir as part of the four-month integrated emergency project covering (water, sanitation and hygiene, protection and health) funded by (USAID) and (IOM).
HDPO aims to train these young people in environmental sanitation in the southern neighborhoods of Al Fashir and the shelter centers that are crowded with IDPs from Tawila Locality and the northern and eastern neighborhoods of the city who fled their homes due to the ongoing war in the country now, to ensure a healthy environment for them, and create a reality for a better life.
To achieve this, measures must be taken to avoid or reduce the negative impact of human activities on the environment to ensure air and soil quality, and achieve sound management of sewage and solid waste generated and emissions of polluting gases.
For this purpose, environmental sanitation covers different areas as water and soil sanitation and emissions control, and includes solid waste management and control of insect-borne diseases and other pollutants.
The environmental sanitation plan must be based on citizen awareness because without proper hygiene habits, a healthy environment can’t be achieved. Consequently, there must be proper planning for drinking water and waste management services.
HDPO also emphasizes that the importance of environmental sanitation lies in the quality of human life and even for his survival. Without environmental sanitation, dirt and emissions can cause major economic, social and health problems and obstacles.
The general environmental balance and the survival of biodiversity must be preserved, and this requires covering a series of goals in specific areas as: Awareness and good health habits to educate the population to raise awareness regarding environmental problems and instilling changes in people’s behavior in favor of the environment.
In this way, it is possible to promote successful environmental sanitation plans, and avoid their deterioration, depending on citizens having appropriate environmental health habits and proper disposal of solid waste and sanitation.
